lithium battery packLithium batteries and cells have made news in recent years for several instances of exploding while in transport, injuring people and damaging property. Although these batteries present hazards in certain conditions, they have become essential to the global marketplace, as they power the electronics many of us use every day. Therefore the International Air Transport Association (IATA) have created, and continued to refine, strict requirements for how such batteries must be handled during air transport to avoid any safety incidents.

The Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) require hazmat employees to undergo training before performing tasks related to hazardous materials. You must have training that details general awareness, safety, security and is function specific. Additionally, you will need to take refresher courses once every two years.

Having in-depth knowledge of your duties and safety measures in emergencies will help keep you and others safe in the workplace. Your training should relate to your job function and provide valuable insight into correctly performing your daily tasks.

IATA DGR Lithium Battery Shipping Training-

IATA’s primary objectives regarding shipping focus on safety and efficiency in the transportation of dangerous goods by air. Here’s what this course will cover:

    • Standardization and Harmonization: IATA strives to establish and promote globally recognized standards for the classification, packaging, marking, labeling, documentation, and handling of dangerous goods on airplanes. This consistency across countries minimizes confusion and ensures everyone involved in the air transport chain follows the same protocols.

    • Safety Enhancement: The core objective is to minimize risks associated with dangerous goods transport by air. This includes preventing accidents, injuries, and environmental damage. IATA achieves this through the DGR (Dangerous Goods Regulations) which outline specific requirements and best practices for safe handling throughout the air transport journey that we will learn all about.

    • Industry Collaboration: IATA fosters cooperation among airlines, shippers, freight forwarders, ground handling agents, and other stakeholders in the air cargo industry. Collaboration helps ensure everyone involved is aware of their roles and responsibilities in implementing the DGR effectively.

    • Facilitation of Trade: By streamlining regulations and promoting standardized practices, IATA aims to facilitate the smooth and efficient movement of dangerous goods by air. This helps to avoid unnecessary delays or disruptions in the global supply chain.

    • Continuous Improvement: IATA actively reviews and updates the DGR based on new scientific data, technological advancements, and incident experiences annually. This ensures the regulations remain effective in mitigating risks and adapting to the evolving nature of dangerous goods transportation.
