lithium battery packLithium batteries and cells have made news in recent years for several instances of exploding while in transport, injuring people and damaging property. Although these batteries present hazards in certain conditions, they have become essential to the global marketplace, as they power the electronics many of us use every day. Therefore the Department of Transportation (DOT) have created, and continued to refine, strict regulations for how such batteries must be handled during transport to avoid any safety incidents.

The Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) require hazmat employees to undergo training before performing tasks related to hazardous materials. You must have training that details general awareness, safety, security and is function specific. Additionally, you will need to take refresher courses once every three years.

Having in-depth knowledge of your duties and safety measures in emergencies will help keep you and others safe in the workplace. Your training should relate to your job function and provide valuable insight into correctly performing your daily tasks.

  • Determine markings or labels to be applied to a package;
  • Determine if placards are required, provides placards, or affixes placards;
  • Determine what should appear on shipping papers or if you fill out shipping papers;
  • Determine emergency response information to be included with shipping papers;
  • Select carriers or modes of transportation to be used;
  • Determine if a package can be reused, if a package is empty, or if a package needs reconditioning (e.g., tank cars, cargo tanks, and drums);
  • Respond to damaged containers, spills, or leaks and reports incidents; and
  • Operate any vehicle or equipment used to transport hazardous materials.
  • Contractors and supervisors who manage or handle hazmat

FedEx, UPS, DHL, or other carriers will ask to see your DOT Hazmat certification in order to send out the hazmat. You will receive your hazmat certification immediately upon completion of this course. Once you have this certification you may be able to start shipping or transporting right away unless you need an endorsement.

Do I need additional training if I ship by air or sea?

Yes, if you are shipping hazmat by air you will need to go through IATA training as well and if you are shipping hazmat by vessel you will need IMDG training. If you ship by all modes of transportation you can take our Multimodal DOT/IATA/IMDG Shipping Course that covers all 3.

How often do I need to renew my DOT certificate?

You will need to take this DOT Hazmat course every 3 years to renew your certification.
