• Define work protocols that enable employees to reduce the dangers linked to working with hazardous materials, emphasizing safe handling techniques to prevent accidents.
• Recognize different types of hazardous materials and waste by utilizing the Department of Transportation (DOT) labeling system.
• Outline the emergency procedures associated with hazardous materials spills, and clarify the employee’s responsibilities during these emergencies.
• Explain the concept of security awareness, which includes potential risks and appropriate responses to security threats.
• Specify the operation-specific tasks employees are required to perform, which include the correct labeling and marking of containers and packages, managing shipping documents, and fulfilling other essential responsibilities.

PART 3 – IMDG OBJECTIVES:

When shipping hazardous materials by vessel, your carrier may necessitate that your packages adhere to international standards. According to IMDG Code 1.3, IMDG training is necessary for anyone involved in transporting dangerous goods. While these training guidelines are primarily recommended for personnel working onshore, many vessel carriers require compliance as a prerequisite for accepting shipments.

It is important to note that these regulations are in addition to the U.S. DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations. Furthermore, the DOT stipulates that hazmat employees must receive training on all relevant modal regulations. The International Maritime Organization, a United Nations agency that oversees international regulations for the maritime transport of dangerous goods, produces the IMDG Code. This code is founded on the recommendations of the United Nations Committee of Experts and serves as the official set of international guidelines for transporting dangerous goods by sea. Compliance with IMDG regulations is often necessary to engage in business with various vessel carriers.

By the end of this course, students will have fulfilled the dangerous goods shipping requirements set forth by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association. They will also have complied with IMDG Code 1.3, the vessel hazmat training mandate established by the IMO. This course covers one of the “function-specific” components of the DOT hazmat employee training, as stipulated in 49 Code of Regulations §172.704.
