An Online Course to Satisfy DOT Hazmat Training Requirements
The US DOT has established a series of regulations governing training programs for what are termed Hazmat Employees. A Hazmat Employee is defined as anyone who is involved with the transportation of hazardous materials. Automobile dealers and suppliers that ship hazardous materials or prepare them for shipping are subject to the DOT’s Hazmat Training Requirements. You can find these requirements in Subpart H of Title 49 Part 172 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR).
The federal government requires that all Hazmat employees receive some basic training that covers hazardous materials awareness, safety, security and other topics related to specific job function. The DOT training program is sometimes referred to as HM-181 or HM-126 training.
Unlike some HM-181 training programs, our online course focuses specifically on topics relevant to the automobile industry. This allows you to satisfy DOT Hazmat training requirements while delving into topics that directly affect your everyday work. The training course is ideal for large teams of employees as well as individuals.
Why Is DOT HM-181 Employee Training Important?
Federal law requires that all Hazmat employees receive the training they need to perform their work safely and promote the safe transportation of dangerous materials. This training requirement helps protect workers, the public and the environment, since improper transportation practices can result in serious harm.
Beyond general safety, getting DOT HM-181 regulations training is essential to a company or organization’s continued success. Violating DOT regulations for transporting hazardous materials can result in civil or criminal penalties and hefty fines. For every training violation, you could receive a $450 penalty. It’s safer and more financially rewarding for everyone to keep DOT hazmat training certifications up-to-date at all times.
Who Needs DOT HM-181 Regulations Training?
All workers involved with the shipping of hazardous materials need DOT HM-181 or HM-126 training. In general, you’ll need to complete DOT HM-181 training for your job if:

- You label or mark packages containing hazardous goods for transportation
- You sign off on DOT documents for hazardous goods transportation
If you select the specific types of packaging for the products you ship, our course #1205 provides the additional packaging training you need to perform those job duties.
