Any time you ship dangerous goods or materials over water, you’re required to comply with the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) code. Ensure your company follows all regulations and requirements with online training courses from Hazmat School.
What Is the IMDG Code?
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has created specific regulations to ensure all kinds of dangerous goods and materials are handled and transported safely. As the main regulatory body for all water-based transportation, this code covers rules for transporting hazardous liquids, solids and gases.
These codes need to be followed to ensure the crew and anyone else involved in the distribution process stays safe. Along with human safety, the codes are designed to prevent ship damage during transport as well as ensure the environment is protected throughout the process.
What Is the IMDG Code Required For?
Any time hazardous liquids, solids and gases are being transported by water, you need to comply with the IMDG code. Several different classifications, ranging from 1-9, categorize the materials based on how risky they are. In other words, Classification 1 is designated for the highest-risk materials like explosives, while Classification 9 is designated for lower-risk materials like dry ice.
Following these comprehensive codes isn’t just a matter of remaining in compliance — not following them can put worker’s health and safety at risk.
