In IATA

Since 1945, the International Air Transport Association has set the standards for air-based transportation throughout the world. One of its most essential roles is setting regulations related to dangerous goods, who handles them and how they should be packaged for safer, more effective transportation.

Most airlines and air carriers require that hazardous materials be handled by IATA-certified professionals at every stage prior to and during shipment. Because a majority of U.S.-based air carriers are part of the IATA, investing in their training is a worthwhile endeavor for most industry workers.

Do You Need an IATA Accreditation?

In general, the industry rule remains that if you handle dangerous goods at any point in the shipment process, you need IATA training and certification. This includes:

  • Logistics teams
  • Freight forwarders
  • Ground handling staff
  • Packagers
  • Shipment teams
  • Airline, flight and cabin crew members
  • Cargo processors
  • Security screeners
  • Compliance evaluators
  • Postal workers

Getting Your IATA Certification

The IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) certification is one of the most common certifications the organization distributes and is requested as proof from all carriers when shipping dangerous goods. Getting certified involves:

  • Prerequisites: You’ll need a valid DOT hazmat training and certification in order to become IATA certified.
  • IATA Training & Fees: You can take your IATA training through any company as long as it meets the required regulations.
  • Proof of Certification: Most companies will provide you with an electronic certification that you can easily print and download as your proof of training and testing. You can provide this to any carrier when shipping your dangerous goods.

Once you have your DGR certification, it remains valid for two years. At the end of the 24-month period, you’ll need to re-train and re-certify to stay active.
