In OSHA

Active shooter training gives you the skills you need to react to an attacker before law enforcement arrives at the scene. It also teaches you how to control bleeding if you get shot and equips you with the run, hide and fight methods.

The FBI defines an active shooter as an individual actively eliminating or trying to eliminate people with a firearm in a crowded area.

Who Can Take This Course?

Active threat education is for everyone. With Active Shooter Events (ASEs) occurring more often in the U.S., it’s more crucial now than ever for people to stay prepared.

What Will You Learn?

The FBI recommends the run, hide and fight survival concepts for ASEs. These are the principles around which educators build active shooter teaching programs. Let’s look at what they mean.

Run

The first step during an ASE is to run and leave the premises. To successfully escape the incident, you’ll need to identify where the exits are beforehand. The training program will teach you to locate exits whenever you enter a building.

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the best evacuation practices include:

  • Fleeing regardless of whether others want to follow.
  • Mapping out an escape route in your mind.
  • Helping people get away if you can.
  • Leaving your belongings behind.

Hide

If you’re unsure how to escape, locate a hiding place while waiting for first responders to terminate the active threat. The ideal hiding place should:

  • Conceal you from the assailant’s view.
  • Block oncoming bullets.
  • Be behind large items such as desks or cabinets.

It’s vital to lock the door when you hide inside a room and block it with heavy furniture. Once you’re out of view, turn off your phone and stay quiet.

Fight

You’ll be in imminent danger if the attacker identifies your hiding place or catches you as you run. To protect yourself from them, you must fight to survive. Here are the actions you can take:

  • Throw objects or improvise weapons to disrupt the assailant.
  • Use aggression to incapacitate them.
  • Commit to your actions to increase the chances of success.
