Individuals in charge of shipping dangerous goods by sea are responsible for being aware of and complying with the rules of the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) code. This code, which is divided into two volumes, covers everything from the requirements for transport operations to a glossary of terms.
What Is the IMDG Code?
The IMDG code contains regulations on safely transporting dangerous liquids, solids and gases by sea. Whether you’ll be loading your shipping containers or using a third-party company to handle them, you must comply with the code any time you ship dangerous goods.
While the rules have been amended several times since it was founded by the International Convention, the purpose remains the same — to protect the health and safety of the crew and ensure the vessel and environment are protected throughout the process. With information on safe transporting and stowing, even in mass volumes and quantities, the code will help you remain safe and compliant throughout the process.
What Are IMDG Volumes?
Based on the Model Regulations, or the UN Recommendations on the transport of Dangerous Goods, this code serves as a framework for those responsible for transporting dangerous goods by sea. The IMDG code is divided into two books, namely volumes 1 and 2.
The first volume is more general, containing information like definitions, instructions and provisions. It includes chapters that cover how to classify dangerous goods, consignment procedures and the requirements for transport operations. It also covers topics like training and security.
In the second volume, there are more specific instructions on the dangerous goods list. There’s a glossary of terms as well as proper shipping names. Here, you’ll find additional provisions relating to reporting procedures, medical first aid and emergency response for ships carrying dangerous goods.
