If you’re interested in pursuing this career path, you must be familiar with commercial truck driver responsibilities.

Commercial Truck Driver Requirements

Commercial truck drivers must:

  • Be over 21: You must be over 21 to drive beyond state lines. Truckers can gain the necessary licenses and operate within the state at the age of 18.
  • Have a CDL: The Department of Transportation (DOT) requires all truck drivers to have a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). You can start with a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) and then receive the training to take the CDL exam. DOT restricts truckers from crossing state lines until they are 21 and older.
  • Meet medical and other requirements: To get your CDL and be eligible for commercial truck driver jobs, you must meet some criteria. You cannot take certain chronic medications or have medical conditions like sleep apnea, diabetes or high blood pressure. You cannot have missing limbs, fingers or toes. You may be exempted under certain circumstances. In addition, you must have no felony convictions or have a criminal record for reckless driving or other serious charges.
  • Comply with industry trucking requirements: Truck driver responsibilities may include working with hazardous materials or hauling specialty items. You will then need additional training.
