Individuals who are responsible for transporting dangerous goods and hazardous materials by sea must remain compliant with the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) code. This code is updated every two years, so it’s essential to ensure you and your organization are following the most recent version.
At Hazmat School, you’ll find the training courses you need to prepare your shipments in compliance and ensure your daily operations run smoothly and safely.
About the IMDG Code
The IMDG Code was founded in 1965, and since then, it has provided important information on how to identify, declare, package and label dangerous goods being transported by either a cargo ship or vessel. Within the code, you’ll have access to detailed requirements on different types of dangerous goods and materials, as well as how to store and segregate them as necessary.
Having a set of standards for all international shipments ensures the process is safe for all humans involved and helps prevent harm to the vessel and environment. Not following this code can affect your employees’ health, the environment and your overall organization. From causing emergency incidents to stalled cargo, failure to comply can lead to costly and hazardous consequences.
Why Is the IMDG Code Updated?
The International Maritime Organization reviews and updates the code. Since it was founded, it has been reviewed to stay up-to-date with industry changes. The code is usually updated based on proposals from Government Members or changes to the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods.
The new amendments are adopted and published by the Maritime Safety Committee. There are alternating years for implementing the code and each amendment is valid for three years.
