The International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) training program was developed to ensure individuals involved in handling and transporting hazardous materials have the necessary training to complete their duties safely and effectively. At Hazmat School, our training courses are designed to minimize the risks associated with working with dangerous goods.
What Is IMDG Training?
The International Maritime Organization (IMO), which is an agency of the United Nations, has produced the IMDG Code. This code is based on recommendations from the United Nations Committee of Experts and contains a set of regulations related to shipping dangerous goods by sea.
The training program is designed to inform and prepare individuals who are responsible for transporting dangerous goods with the knowledge they need to stay safe and compliant. All international vessel carriers are required to comply with these training rules and regulations.
Those who transport hazardous materials must be IMDG-certified and have adequate training in transporting dangerous goods. This includes individuals who load or unload cargo, select shipping names and sign dangerous goods documentation.
How Often Is IMDG Training Required?
Once you’ve received certification, a refresher is required every three years. The frequency of the refreshers ensures you stay up-to-date with the latest rules and regulations.
Whether you’ll be handling or transporting flammable liquids or explosives, the training ensures you understand how to identify dangerous goods and remain compliant throughout the process. You’ll gain the knowledge and skills needed to keep yourself, others, the vessel and the environment safe.
