If you transport dangerous goods by sea, you must ensure you follow the rules and regulations of the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) code. Anyone who ships by vessel or over water, ranging from companies who load the shipping containers to those who send materials to freight forwarders, must comply to keep individuals, the vessel and the environment safe during transport.
About the IMDG Code
The IMDG code includes regulations for shipping various types of hazardous materials, including liquids, solids and gases. It includes information on how to pack, transport and store different materials to ensure the well-being of everyone involved in the process.
Failing to meet these codes during water-based transportation not only puts individuals at risk but may also result in penalties or the cargo being rejected.
Since it was created, the code has been amended several times to keep up-to-date with the latest changes. Keeping up with these changes and ensuring you and your crew stay safe and compliant.
How Long Does the Certification Last?
Several different factors can impact how long the IMDG certification remains valid. While the IMDG code doesn’t have a standard recertification schedule, it usually only lasts three years. This means that even if you have undergone the training to receive your certification, you will need to take the course at least once every three years.
