Transporting Dangerous Goods

Dangerous goods, or hazardous materials, are capable of causing harm to individuals, property or the environment. Depending on how risky these materials are, they could fall into one of nine classes. The first class covers high-risk substances such as explosives. Class 9, which is at the other end of the spectrum, includes miscellaneous dangerous substances. Meanwhile, in the middle classes, you’ll find materials like flammable liquids and solids and toxic and infectious substances.

Organizations must follow specific guidelines and regulations as stipulated by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in their Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) manual. The DGR minimizes the risks associated with handling and transporting hazardous materials.

How Are Dangerous Goods Transported by Air?

Organizations must ensure that all dangerous goods are clearly marked and labeled depending on what’s inside. Labels are broken down into categories such as:

  • Explosives
  • Gases under pressure
  • Flammable
  • Oxidizers
  • Toxic
  • Corrosive
  • Aquatic toxicity

All packages must be able to withstand the air transportation process, and some may even require UN-specified packaging to show that they have passed standard tests.
