In IATA

Many household and personal care products contain liquids and pressurized gases called propellants. Industrial sectors may use the propellants for various applications, including paints, cleaners, lubricants and pesticides. When nozzles are pressed, the gases push the liquid into the air to create a fine mist or aerosol cloud. If you want to ship aerosol cans by air, you’ll need to follow some guidelines for safe and compliant transportation.

Why Is Aerosol Identification Important?

According to the Dangerous Goods Regulations, products in spray cans are often considered dangerous goods. Because aerosol specifications and guidelines vary, you’ll need to check the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) DGR to learn about the protocols for an exact product. Completing research and following the protocols can help protect your employees and business. Additionally, following compliance allows you to keep your operations running smoothly and helps you avoid penalties with related fees.

Guidelines for Hazardous Materials

The IATA indicates whether you can or can’t ship certain aerosol products by air. Looking at the DGR helps you determine if the materials can be shipped by air with special provisions or are considered forbidden.

For example, some flammable aerosols containing toxic gases are considered forbidden to ship by air. On the other hand, the DGR indicates you can ship some non-flammable aerosol products by air via passenger or cargo flights or in limited quantities.

If you are allowed to ship your aerosol products by air, the instructions will tell you to follow packing instructions as set out by IATA. The regulations identify the allowable limits for passenger and cargo flights with rules for how the items should be appropriately packaged, marked, labeled and loaded for transportation.
