Back Injury Prevention and Safe Lifting Techniques
In 2016, back injuries accounted for 38.5% of all musculoskeletal disorder cases resulting in days away from work. Back injuries affect many workers, especially in jobs that involve lifting, repetitive motion, vibration or awkward postures. If you’ve ever suffered a back injury, you know they can be painful and debilitating. That’s why back injury prevention training is vital to success, productivity and safety in the workplace.
Hazmat School’s Back Injury Prevention and Safe Lifting Techniques is an interactive online safety course that offers training on safe work practices, pre-lift considerations, proper lift technique and helpful exercises that you can perform to avoid back injuries. Open to anyone interested in preventing back injuries, this short course is taught entirely online through an engaging PowerPoint with audio and video.
Who Should Take This Class?
We have designed our online training for back injury prevention to meet the needs of all general industry workers. This includes employees who are at risk of work-related back injury, as well as their managers who are responsible for upholding workplace health and safety. The course may prove particularly valuable for workers with jobs that require them to engage in difficult physical tasks, such as lifting heavy objects, kneeling, twisting, bending or repeating the same motions with little variation.
Consider taking this course before beginning a job that puts you at risk of back injury. When you know how to work safely from day one, you can prevent injuries and reduce the job’s impact on your body.
Industries That Require This Course

What Regulations Does This Course Satisfy?
The United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) does not specifically require employers to provide back injury prevention training. However, under the Occupational Safety and Health Act’s General Duty Clause, Section 5(a)(1), employers do have an obligation to keep the workplace free from serious recognized hazards, including ergonomic hazards that could lead to a back injury.
In addition to altering workflow and minimizing weight to be lifted, general industry businesses can reduce ergonomic hazards and remain in compliance with the General Duty Clause by training all workers on proper lifting technique and back injury prevention.
This prevention course will cover what employees should know before moving and handling materials. It will also provide a number of exercises that workers can use to avoid back injuries. When you complete our back injury prevention and safe lifting techniques course, you will understand what a back injury is, what factors contribute to causing one and what you can do to reduce your risk while at work.
