Grading Policy
To successfully complete this course, you must score a 75% or more on the final exam. You will have three opportunities to retake this test if you do not pass on your first attempt. After your third attempt, you will need to re-enroll in the course.

Who needs to be DOT/IATA hazmat trained?
A “hazmat employer” is required to train all “hazmat employees.” A hazmat employee is anyone who directly affects the shipment of a hazardous material. For example, you will need DOT/IATA training if you:
- Determine if a material is a hazardous waste or hazardous substance;
- Sign a hazmat shipping document or a hazardous waste manifest;
- Classify materials;
- Assign packing groups or hazard classes;
- Select shipping descriptions;
- Design, select, purchase, or fills packages;
- Load, unload, move, handle, or work around hazardous materials (e.g., warehouses or loading docks);
- Determine markings or labels to be applied to a package;
- Determine if placards are required, provides placards, or affixes placards;
- Determine what should appear on shipping papers or if you fill out shipping papers;
- Determine emergency response information to be included with shipping papers;
- Select carriers or modes of transportation to be used;
- Determine if a package can be reused, if a package is empty, or if a package needs reconditioning (e.g., tank cars, cargo tanks, and drums);
- Respond to damaged containers, spills, or leaks and reports incidents; and
- Operate any vehicle or equipment used to transport hazardous materials.
- Contractors and supervisors who manage or handle hazmat
FedEx, UPS, DHL, or other carriers will ask to see your DOT /IATA Hazmat certification in order to send out the hazmat. You will receive your hazmat certification immediately upon completion of this course. Once you have this certification you may be able to start shipping or transporting right away.
Do I need additional training if I ship by sea?
Yes, if you are shipping hazmat by sea you will need to go through IMDG training. If you ship by all modes of transportation you can take our Multimodal DOT/IATA/IMDG Shipping Course that covers all 3.
How often do I need to renew my DOT & IATA certification?
You will need to renew your DOT hazmat certification every 3 years and your IATA DGR certification should be renewed every 2 years.
