OSHA 8-hr Hazardous Waste Refresher -
for Regulators, Engineers and Other Waste Site Visitors,
Course #1390

TITLE:OSHA 8-hr Hazardous Waste Refresher - for Regulators, Engineers and Other Waste Site Visitors
COURSE NUMBER:1390
HOURS (EST.): 8
CEUS:0.8 CEUs, 8 contact hours
REGULATION(S) SATISFIED:29 CFR 1910.120 (e)
PREREQUISITES:Students will have previously taken a 40-hr or 24-hr OSHA Hazardous Waste Worker course and will have a valid unexpired certificate.
NOTE:Our basic refresher compressed, with an expanded section on hazard identification and personal protection.

Are you required to take a HAZWOPER refresher course but are tired of taking the same things year after year, only to find that most of them don't really apply to what you do? Like many who work in the field of regulation enforcement, engineering, or even contractors who don't work at one particular site, your job may be one where you work at different sites throughout the year, each site having a different type of hazard. And, because you don't work with the materials at any one site for very long, your comfort level with knowing and understanding their hazards may be limited.

In developing this module for our Refresher programs, we looked into the various types of people who might visit a range of sites where hazardous materials are present. We looked into those who work in the field enforcing regulations or who visit various types of sites where they provide their services. This includes Coast Guard boarding officers whose job it is to inspect ships and shipments for hazards as they come into the country. We thought also of those who are past Fire Marshals and Fire Inspectors and who may be involved in a variety of sites where the whole range of hazardous materials are used. We also recognized that there are a whole range of those who take HAZWOPER courses and who may work in the field as enforcement officials in other areas such as water and air quality, environmental protection, and hazardous waste. And finally, there is the group of Engineers or other service providers whose primary job may place them at a number of sites where materials that they are not familiar with are used, stored or handled.

With these types of personnel in mind, we designed the first of two different Refresher courses for the nomads who travel to different sites in the course of their work. Your course, the first of the two will cover the following areas in a bit more detail than the traditional Hazwoper Refresher courses:

  • An overview the types of chemical hazards of commonly encountered materials found in the workplace including incompatibility issues
  • Application of PPE for those who visit various sites

By the time that you return for your next Refresher, we plan to have a second in the series of Refreshers for those who move from site to site. This one will cover more of the physical hazards such as noise, heat, heights, and even environmental issues such as insects and animals.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS CLASS?

Everyone who has taken the 24- or 40-hour OSHA Hazwoper course knows that they are required to maintain their certification by taking an eight-hour annual refresher course. This self-paced program is full of interactive exercises and activities to help you meet the OSHA requirement.

Regardless of what you do, or even where you work, your role can be challenging in itself but it is clearly compounded by the safety issues that accompany your working in a variety of areas with a range of materials. So if this is the case, then, this course is for you!

This course has been selected by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection for their annual Hazwoper refresher.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Based on compliance with OSHA's 29 CFR, Part 1910.120:

4. Demonstrate knowledge of the routes of entry for hazardous materials to enter the body.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of the health effects that hazardous materials can have on the body.
6. Demonstrate an understanding of the terminology used in describing hazardous materials including vapor density, specific gravity, miscibility/solubility, carcinogen, teratogen, mutagen, pH, PPM, TLV, IDLH, flammable/explosive range, combustible, flammable, flash point, and ignition temperature.
7. Demonstrate an understanding of the primary identification systems including the Department of Transportation (DOT) system, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 704 system, and Hazardous Materials Information System (HMIS).
8. Understand the need for personal protective equipment when using hazardous materials.
