WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS CLASS?
Everyone who has taken the 24- or 40- hour OSHA Hazwoper course is required to take an eight-hour annual refresher course. Our course has been designed for workers in the wastewater treatment field. This self-paced program is full of interactive exercises and activities to help you meet that OSHA requirement, with the ability to take it as time permits.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
This program meets the competencies outlined in the OSHA regulation.
- Meet the requirements for certification
of 29 CFR, Part 1910.120 or other applicable state regulations for
certification in hazardous materials/waste worker.
- Understand the various training
regulations relating to hazardous materials handling and
response.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the types of
hazardous materials and the various hazards and risks associated with
them.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the
routes of entry for hazardous materials to enter the
body.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the
health effects that hazardous materials can have on the body.
- Demonstrate an understanding of
the terminology used in describing hazardous materials including vapor
pressure, vapor density, specific gravity, miscibility/solubility, carcinogen,
teratogen, mutagen, pH, PPM, etiologic, TLV, IDLH, flammable/explosive range,
combustible, flammable, flash point, and ignition
temperature.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the primary
identification systems including the Department of Transportation
(DOT) system, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 704
system, and Hazardous Materials Information System (HMIS).
- Understand the need for personal protective
equipment when using hazardous materials.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the need for
respiratory equipment and of the advantages and disadvantages
to the types of respiratory equipment.
- The background and need of sewage treatment
plants.
- The type of protective equipment required and
available to the sewage plant worker.
- How the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs)
relate to wasteworker safety.
- Tips for manhole lifting and access.
- The hazards of toxic gases found in sewage treatment
plants, including hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen cyanide, chlorine,
and carbon monoxide.
- The hazards of flammable gases found in sewage
collection systems, such as methane, diesel, and gasoline.
- The basics of confined space awareness.
- The hazards posed by infectious agents to wastewater
workers.
- Types of safety equipment available to wastewater
workers.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Students will complete 13
self-paced lessons, review questions at the end of each section, and a final
test via electronic format.
You will need a computer with Internet access and an email account.
No text is required; all course materials are
available online. The course will take approximately 8 hours to complete. Upon
registration, you will receive a password via email, giving you access to the
course contents at http://classes.hazmatschool.com/.
GRADING POLICY
Passing this course requires
completing end-of-section review questions and completing the final test with a
grade of 75% or better. There is no passing grade required for review
questions. If you do not receive a grade of at least 75% on the final quiz, you
may retake the quiz up to a total of three (3) times.
COURSE SCHEDULE AND DEADLINES
The course is designed to be
self-paced. You may stay enrolled in this eight-hour class for up to two
months. After two months, you will need to re-enroll. Upon successful
completion of the course,
we will verify your work, and you will receive a certificate via email.
